On our coffee table this month? Four new books featuring enduring icons of style, music and photography.

Harper's BAZAAR Australia, May 2013

American Muse
This tome celebrates the elegantly lived life of actor, writer, designer and high-society gardener C.Z. Guest.
A fixture on the New York social scene, Guest kept company with Ernest Hemingway, Salvador Dalí, Truman Capote and BAZAAR’s Diana Vreeland, and was often photographed by Slim Aarons, Irving Penn and Cecil Beaton. Truly one of the original American muses; Guest’s classic, effortless style still influences fashion today. C.Z. Guest: American Style Icon by Susanna Salk (Rizzoli), $75.

Double Dutch
Partners, lovers, co-workers, collaborators. Photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin have been a powerhouse duo for more than two decades, blurring the lines between art and fashion photography, and editorial and commercial work. This comprehensive retrospective, until now only available in a limited-edition format, took the couple nine years to compile and curate, and is a magnificent showcase of their work, from the raw to the glamorous to the downright surreal. Pretty Much Everything by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh
Matadin (Taschen), $100.

The Women
This collection consists of some of the first works Helmut Newton ever published and, although the images were taken between the 1960s and ’80s, they still look current — a testament to the Berlin-born photographer’s timeless style. Filled with Newton’s fascinating journal-style anecdotes from each shoot, this is an essential book for shutterbugs and fashion-lovers alike. Helmut Newton: World Without Men (Taschen), $50.

Long Live The King
When photographer Al Wertheimer was commissioned by a record company to shoot Elvis Presley in 1956,
his response was, “Elvis who?”. A week later, Presley’s debut album hit number one, propelling him into history forever. Shot during an electrifying time in The King’s career, these previously unseen images candidly illustrate the enigmatic man behind the suit. Beautiful. Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll by Alfred Wertheimer (Taschen), $1000.
